75 million package for shift work, boosting apprentice income by up to 6.74 percent

Vienna (OTS) The trade unions PRO-GE and GPA were able to achieve a successful conclusion in the fifth round of collective agreement negotiations with the employers’ association for the metal technology industry. The negotiation for the settlement lasted eleven hours. The actual wages and salaries increase by 3.55 percent. All current employees will receive this increase retrospectively from November 1st. The minimum wages and basic salaries increase by 3 percent.

The allowances will be increased by 3.55 percent and the allowances by 2.5 percent. The hourly allowance for the second shift will also be gradually doubled to one euro by November 2023. The allowance for the third shift will be increased in stages from 2.52 euros to four euros by November 2027. This corresponds to an increase of 58.5 percent. This agreed package amounts to an additional 75 million euros annually for shift work.

The apprentice’s income will be increased even more by up to 6.74 percent. The agreement results in a concrete increase of 50.10 euros (+ 6.74 percent) for the first year of apprenticeship, for the second year it is 40.99 euros more (+ 4.27 percent), for the third year it is 70. 33 euros (+ 5.61 percent) and in the fourth year of the apprenticeship, the monthly income increases by 93.25 euros (+ 5.63 percent).

“The strong wage and salary increases are above all a success for the employees. The strong pressure from the companies with the works meetings and warning strikes has caused movement on the employers’ side. Only in this way was it possible to put together a very, very good overall package including strong increases in shift allowances and apprentice income, ”say the two chief negotiators Rainer Wimmer (PRO-GE) and Karl Dürtscher (GPA).

In the framework of the law, the parties to the collective bargaining agreement agreed to set up a group of experts to deal with the issues of “working time organization” and “life phase-oriented working time models”. Among other things, the time account model, shift work, flexitime or the four-day week should be taken into account. The topic areas of leisure time options, elements of time sovereignty for employees, shorter working hours for physically and psychologically stressful work as well as age-based and practice-oriented distribution of working hours are also planned for the working group. The topics should be discussed openly and a social partnership report should be available by autumn 2022.

In addition, a joint social partner declaration was agreed upon with a commitment to fair treatment of temporary workers in the metalworking industry.

The possibility of weekend work when there is a reasonable increase in the need for work will be extended by six Sundays – limited to two years. The approval of the works council or the trade unions is required for this.

The announced warning strikes will not take place. Negotiations with other metal industry employers’ associations will take place on Monday.
