Turkish Cypriot football player Mete Adanır, who lost his life as a result of a traffic accident while playing football in Turkey, was commemorated on the 35th anniversary of his death.

A commemoration ceremony was held for Adanır at his grave in Nicosia, as every year. At the ceremony, Mete Adanır’s brother Eralp Adanır also shared the book he wrote, “Mete Adanır, in memory of the 35th anniversary of his departure from us”, to the participants. Republican Turkish Party Deputy Sami Özuslu, Turkish Cypriot Football Federation President Hasan Sertoğlu, Doğan Turkish Union President Bayar Piskobulu, as well as Mete Adanır’s loved ones, also attended the commemoration ceremony.

Eralp Adanır made the following statements in his post on his social media account regarding the commemoration ceremony: “Today, we commemorated my brother Mete Adanır at his grave once again on his 35th anniversary. “I would like to thank our friends who did not leave us alone on this commemoration day, everyone who sent wreaths and expressed their feelings on social media and in the press.” Mete Adanır Born in Limassol on November 4, 1961, Mete Adanır was involved in athletics and football from an early age. Adanır, who played in the Cyprus 1st League as a licensed football player in his high school life, took part in the A-Team of the Doğan Turkish Union. Adanır, who went to England for higher education in September 1979, was selected for the junior squad of the Orient team in London.

Adanır, who played football successfully in the junior team for about 6 months, was then promoted to the A Team ‘Reserve’ reserves and proved his talent in football in England by signing a 2-year professional agreement with Orient in the spring of 1980. Adanır’s professional agreement was canceled after the English Football Federation asked for the ‘clean sheet’ from Southern Cyprus and the Cyprus Football Federation said ‘we do not have such a football player, he is a player of the unrecognized Turkish side’. Adanır, who was in the KTFD A National Team squad at the 1st Islamic Games held in Izmir in 1980, signed an agreement with Altay in June 1981 and played for Altay for 4 years. Adanır was transferred to Konyaspor in 1985. Adanır became the top scorer in the Turkish 2nd League in the 1985-1986 season, scoring 25 goals.

With this success, he was also selected as the Athlete of the Year in Konya. Samsunspor, which had a striker shortage after Tanju left Samsunspor in 1987, transferred Adanır. Adanır, who started playing in the first league again, played for Samsunspor in the 1987-88 and 1988-1989 seasons. Adanır, who had negotiations with Beşiktaş and Galatasaray for the 1989-90 season, died at the age of 27 as a result of an unfortunate accident before he could join these clubs.
