Metriport: Revolutionizing Healthcare Data Exchange with Open-Source Intelligence

Metriport is rapidly transforming how healthcare organizations access, analyze, and exchange patient data, offering a real-time, open-source data intelligence platform that taps into comprehensive medical information for over 300 million individuals. The company is actively seeking passionate engineers to tackle challenges at scale and build solutions with a direct impact on people’s lives.

Scaling Healthcare Data: A Multi-Million Dollar Opportunity

Founded on a strong product-market fit, Metriport has already achieved multi-million dollar annual recurring revenue (ARR) and secured over 80 customers, including prominent names like Strive Health, Circle Medical, and Brightside Health. Backed by leading angel investors and venture capital firms – including a recent, currently unannounced funding round – the company boasts a substantial runway for continued growth and innovation.

“We wouldn’t be satisfied by building yet another CRM company,” a company release stated, highlighting Metriport’s commitment to meaningful work. The team operates with a consistent intensity, establishing itself as a leader in the industry despite being a lean organization.

A Culture of Ownership and Engineering Excellence

Metriport’s culture is built on a foundation of consistent hard work balanced with a commitment to employee well-being. The company fosters a flat organizational structure, prioritizing autonomy and collaboration. Engineers are empowered to “get shit done” and contribute directly to the company’s success, as evidenced by its rapid product velocity and active GitHub commit history.

The founders lead by example, working six days a week from their San Francisco office, while simultaneously offering employees the flexibility to design schedules that best suit their needs. Performance is measured by output, not simply time spent in the office. Notably, the engineering team is heavily populated by former founders – including two Y Combinator alumni – bringing a unique entrepreneurial spirit to the company. Metriport actively seeks individuals based on demonstrated competence and potential, rather than traditional prestige.

The Role: A Full-Stack Generalist

Metriport is seeking “generalist” engineers with at least six years of full-stack experience and a location in the San Francisco Bay Area (or a willingness to relocate). Ideal candidates possess an entrepreneurial mindset, an “olympian-level” work ethic, and the confidence to build scalable systems across the entire technology stack.

According to the company, successful applicants will be comfortable taking ownership of projects, providing technical guidance to others, and tackling complex problems with a proactive, solution-oriented approach. A key attribute is a focus on delivering value to the customer, prioritizing results over the latest technology trends. The ideal candidate asks, “Why can’t this be done in three days?” when presented with a three-week timeline.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities: From Ideation to Impact

New engineers at Metriport will quickly onboard using comprehensive materials and then immediately begin shipping product to customers. Daily tasks include:

  • Driving projects end-to-end, from initial ideation to production rollout, including writing and refining project design documents.
  • Collaborating with the team to validate solutions through staging environments and pilot customer programs.
  • Iterating on solutions based on customer feedback and deploying updates to all customers.
  • Reviewing code from other engineers, balancing speed with quality assurance.
  • Managing tasks in Linear and participating in sprint planning, retro sessions, and quarterly planning.
  • Attending a daily 30-minute stand-up meeting at 7:30 AM PST.
  • Participating in an on-call rotation to address alerts, customer issues, and backlog items related to data exchange (DX).

Recent projects have included leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) to transform unstructured doctor’s notes into structured medical data, building an OpenSearch cluster for rapid patient medical history searches, and modernizing legacy data transmission protocols.

Technical Stack & Benefits

Metriport’s core technologies include Node.js, Express, React, TypeScript, JavaScript, Bash, HTML, CSS, Aurora PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, HAPI FHIR, AWS services (including CDK and Docker), Cursor, Git, and MacOS. Engineers can also expect exposure to Python, Java, and other technologies as the platform evolves.

The company offers a competitive compensation package, including equity, full family Platinum health insurance, a 401(k) with matching contributions, flexible work arrangements, healthy meals when in the office, quarterly team off-sites, a provided MacBook, and unlimited PTO.

Healthcare Data Expertise: A Plus

While healthcare experience isn’t mandatory, familiarity with industry standards like FHIR, HIE, IHE, EHR/EMR, NPI, TEFCA, ADT, HL7, HEDIS, RAF, SNOMED, LOINC, and ICD-10 is considered a valuable asset.
