Kimbrel Signs Minor League Deal with Mets, Seeking Tenth Team

A veteran closer is getting another chance. The New York Mets signed nine-time All-Star reliever Craig Kimbrel to a minor league contract on Thursday, offering him a path back to the majors through spring training. This move provides the 37-year-old an opportunity to pitch for his tenth different Major League Baseball franchise.

Kimbrel’s Recent Journey

Kimbrel posted a 2.25 ERA with 14 games pitched for the Atlanta Braves and Houston Astros last season, finishing with an 0-1 record. Prior to that, he spent time within the Texas Rangers organization, making 24 appearances for their Triple-A affiliate before ultimately being released. This signing represents a potential resurgence for a pitcher who has been a dominant force in the league for over a decade.

A Decorated Career

Over 16 seasons, Kimbrel has amassed a 56-48 record, having previously pitched for the Padres, Red Sox, White Sox, Cubs, Dodgers, Phillies, and Orioles. He currently ranks fourth among all relievers with 1,282 career strikeouts and fifth in MLB history with 440 saves. The former National League Rookie of the Year continues to chase milestones in a career defined by late-inning dominance.

Mets Add Depth Behind the Plate

In addition to the Kimbrel signing, the Mets also extended a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training to Austin Barnes, a 36-year-old catcher. Barnes appeared in 13 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season, hitting .214, and spent the remainder of the year in the San Francisco Giants’ minor league system. This addition provides the Mets with added depth at the catcher position as they prepare for the 2026 season.

Nationals Claim Lovelady, Designate Gasper

In a separate transaction, the Washington Nationals claimed left-handed pitcher Richard Lovelady off waivers from the Mets. To make room on their 40-man roster, the Nationals designated utility player Mickey Gasper for assignment. Lovelady has a career record of 5-13 with three saves and a 5.35 ERA across six major league seasons.

The moves signal continued roster adjustments as teams finalize their plans heading into spring training.
