The dam will open in May for the first time since independence
Mettur: Chief Minister MK Stalin sprinkled flowers from the Mettur dam in Salem district for irrigation of Kuruai cultivation.
Water will be released from the Mettur Dam annually on June 12 for Kuruva cultivation irrigation. Due to heavy rains in the Cauvery catchment area, the water level of the Mettur Dam rose rapidly to 117 feet.
As the water was thus arranged to be opened, Chief Minister Stalin opened the first 3,000 cubic feet of water through the eight eye canals on the right bank of the dam. The Chief Minister met the farmers in the dam area and received their petitions and grievances.
The Mettur Dam was opened in May 1942 and 1943 before the country gained independence. The dam was opened in May for the first time since independence.
17.32 lakh acres of delta districts including Trichy, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Pudukottai will be irrigated by Mettur Dam for irrigation and canal irrigation.
