With this in mind, it is worth knowing the winner of the Carlos Slim Health Award 2023 because the winner was a prominent Mexican doctor.
To recap, the Carlos Slim Foundation is a non-profit Mexican civil association. It was created in 1986 under the name of Asociación Carso by the businessman Carlos Slim Helu with the intention of favoring the integral development of Mexican and Latin American society.
To date, it has social responsibility programs and actions focused on 12 areas: health, education, employment, economic development, culture, sports, social justice, human development, migration, support in natural disasters, road safety and environmental conservation.

The two winners of this edition were chosen from dozens of proposals received by an independent jury of experts. Below we share the names and portraits of the winners.
Dr. José Alejandro Madrigal Fernández (Mexico) – Best career in research
Dr. José Alejandro Madrigal Fernández is a doctor from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Subsequently, he completed specialty and doctoral studies at Harvard, London, and Stanford universities. His research has focused on immunotherapy and stem cell transplantation.
Dr. Madrigal’s leadership led him to pioneer the creation of donor registries and umbilical cord banks in the world. He was the founder and scientific director of the Anthony Nolan Cellular Therapy Center. His leadership led him to chair the European Transplant Society. In addition. He has served as Vice Chancellor for Latin America at University College London.
His research has resulted in the publication of more than 500 articles in the most prestigious magazines in the world, including Nature, Nature Genetics y Lancet. He is currently conducting research on cell therapy against different types of cancer.
Mexican doctor makes history and is considered a world leader in immunotherapy
He has received distinctions from prestigious academies in Mexico, Latin America, the United States and Europe. Likewise, he has been recognized with three different honorary doctorates, among them from the University of Guadalajara. In 2022 he received from the Queen of England the Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for his contributions.
Institute of Clinical and Health Effectiveness (Argentina) – Exceptional Institution
He Institute of Clinical and Health Effectiveness (IECS) is an independent, non-profit academic institution dedicated to research, education, and technical cooperation in health. It is an institution affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) that houses an executing unit of the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research of Argentina.
Made up of 5 departments and 6 research centers, clinical trials, epidemiological surveillance, qualitative research, and evaluation of the effectiveness of health interventions are developed, among other projects, on topics such as health technology, maternal and child health, chronic diseases, cancer, and palliative care and public health policies.
His research projects involve thousands of people in Latin America and other regions. To date, more than 700 projects have been developed in 40 countries. As some examples of their research, they have generated studies on maternal and perinatal health that involve more than 250,000 women who gave birth in 40 hospitals in 16 countries and the study on the state of cardiovascular health follows 7,500 adults in three countries. .
