  • At least 68% of people who want to lose weight on their own, fail.
  • A group of Mexican doctors is leading a clinical trial to test a new weight loss treatment.

The work of Mexican doctors goes far beyond caring for patients in the office. Another field in which they can perform is research and it is also very valuable because it is the basis of innovation. For this reason, they constantly lead studies to identify possible new drugs or treatments.

The problem of obesity in Mexico

With this in mind, in Mexico it has been documented that in the last two decades some of the comorbidities associated with obesity, such as diabetes1 and hypertension, contribute to a large percentage of mortality, disability, and premature death in the population. Due to this, excess weight is currently considered one of the main public health problems.

According to the National Health Survey (ENSANUT 2019), 74% of the adult population is overweight or obese. Although many have tried to lose weight on their own, 68% of them fail in the attempt6.

Given this scenario and with the approval of the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris), a group of Mexican doctors are recruiting women and men who wish to participate in a clinical study. The goal is to help them in a weight loss process.

He “Clinical study to evaluate the efficacy and safety in the loss of body weight and body composition in overweight patients with comorbidities or obesity” seeks to recruit 160 adult patients from Mexico City and the metropolitan area who are overweight or obese, with or without comorbidities, who want or need to lose weight. It includes monthly medical follow-up for participants, treatment, clinical studies every 3 months, as well as a dietary guide and physical activity recommendations.

The treatment lasts for 13 months and seeks to demonstrate the reduction in body weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), waist-hip perimeter, glucose, insulin, cholesterol, glycosylated hemoglobin and triglycerides.

The general condition of the patient will be monitored from the time they enter the study and up to one month after the end of treatment. To start the process, studies and safety tests are carried out to verify the health of the patient and to know if he is a candidate or not to enter the clinical study.

The research team for this study is made up of Mexican physicians specialized in the san francisco sanatoriumled by Dr. Alfonso Toriz (Director and principal investigator), Dr. Leopoldo Pérez (sub-investigator), Dr. David Barriel and Dr. Silvia Guzmán (evaluating physicians), who will assess and provide the necessary information so that the Participants decide to enter voluntarily.

The follow-up of the patient, subsequent consultations and laboratory studies will not represent any cost for the participants and will be carried out at the San Francisco Sanatorium facilities. It is located at Calle Cajeme No. 43, Col. Álvaro Obregón, Venustiano Carranza mayor’s office in CDMX.
