Again it was reported failure in the elevator of a Mexican hospital. These types of inconveniences have become common recently and are the result of lack of maintenance in medical units. Furthermore, it is not a minor issue because it has even caused fatalities.
Hospital elevator failure, who were the people affected?
On this occasion, the incident occurred during the afternoon of this October 26, 2023 in the Regional High Specialty Hospital of the Yucatan Peninsula (HRAE). Despite being a top-level hospital, I cannot avoid the damage.
According to what was described by the witnesses, everything was generated when a group of residents entered the elevator from the fifth floor to go to the ground floor. At first there was nothing out of the ordinary but when I was on the second floor the machinery lost the brakes and fell uncontrollably.
Due to the incident, residents suffered some minor inconvenience. Immediately a medical evaluation to identify possible internal damage but none were seriously injured.
For its part, the Ministry of Health (SSa) immediately published a statement in this regard. He assured that everything was caused by a mechanical failure and avoided using the term “accident.” He also stressed that the safety of staff and patients is always the top priority.

He also indicated that a technical report would be requested to determine exactly the causes of the damage. In addition, all necessary maintenance will be provided so that a failure of this type is not repeated.
Other cases in which failure in a hospital elevator has been reported
As mentioned at the beginning, these types of incidents are not new but are frequently reported. The most serious case occurred on July 9, 2023 in the Regional Hospital No. 18 of the IMSS in Playa del Carmen in Quintana Roo. Due to the failure of the doors, a six-year-old girl was trapped and lost her life instantly.
The unfortunate event became a national scandal and caused the head of the IMSS, Zoé Robledo, to suspend its activities. It was even said that it was the reason why he preferred not to compete to be a candidate for governor of Chiapas.
