Mexican social media influencer César Gastélum was shot and killed on August 4, 2026, while livestreaming a video with two friends outside a fast-food restaurant in Culiacán, the capital of Sinaloa state. The 24-year-old creator, who amassed nearly 600,000 TikTok followers through comedy sketches, was targeted by helmeted gunmen on a motorcycle.
The killing unfolded in plain sight as thousands of viewers watched in real time on the streaming platform Kick. The victim, streaming under the online alias Compasexor, had been filming outside a restaurant in front of a KFC restaurant in Mexico as part of a content challenge. Gastélum and his two companions were dressed in the bright orange coats and carrying the backpacks typically used by food delivery drivers, initially leading onlookers and police to mistake them for delivery workers.
Moments before the attack, social media fans noted that the influencer had warned his friends about two individuals on a motorcycle tracking their movements. Those kids scare me,
Gastélum remarked in the footage approximately two minutes before the fatal shooting, according to video captured during the broadcast.
The Attack and Immediate Aftermath in Culiacán
As the broadcast continued, a motorcycle carrying a driver and a pillion passenger pulled alongside the group. The driver drew a handgun and fired a gun directly at Gastélum at point-blank range, striking him in the head. The attackers fled the scene immediately, leaving the influencer with no vital signs by the time paramedics arrived.

State prosecutors and military units quickly cordoned off the area just metres from the state attorney general’s office. Sinaloa state security officials confirmed the fatality, noting that a major security operation was launched across the city. Investigators from the Sinaloa Prosecutor’s Office and federal units began examining cartridge casings and reviewing closed-circuit television footage to identify the culprits.
“The actual perpetrators, and if applicable the mastermind, must be arrested, and the reason behind this tragic homicide must be uncovered.”
Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexican President
During her morning press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized that authorities were actively working to track down those responsible for the homicide. Meanwhile, Mexico’s security cabinet announced on X that investigators were reviewing several of Gastélum’s past posts, some of which referenced a faction of an organized crime group.
Cartel Conflict and the Rising Danger for Content Creators
The homicide reignited concerns over the safety of content creators operating within Sinaloa, a region gripped by cartel violence. Culiacán has served as the epicentre of a brutal turf war following a split between rival factions of the Sinaloa Cartel—known as Los Chapitos and La Mayiza—which escalated sharply in September 2024 after the abduction of Ismael El Mayo
Zambada.

Gastélum’s death mirrors a disturbing pattern of violence directed at digital personalities in Mexico. According to local reporting, at least 12 social media influencers have been murdered in Culiacán since the cartel factions turned on one another. The tragedy also bears striking similarities to the May 2025 killing of 23-year-old beauty influencer Valeria Márquez, who was shot dead during a TikTok livestream at a salon in Zapopan, Jalisco.
Federal authorities recently arrested Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, known as El R-1
, in connection with Márquez’s death. Security Minister Omar García Harfuch identified him as the leader of a criminal cell linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, and prosecutors also accused him of ordering and financing the November 2025 assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo.
Unresolved Questions and the Ongoing Investigation
As of Wednesday, no arrests have been announced in connection with Gastélum’s killing, and officials have not confirmed whether the content creator had received direct threats prior to the attack.
Federal and local security forces continue to analyze digital evidence, forensic materials, and witness accounts as the multi-agency operation moves forward. Authorities have not indicated when their formal investigation into the shooting will conclude.
