  • The medical residency model emerged in the 1950s at the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore in the United States.
  • To obtain a place in a hospital, it is mandatory to pass the National Examination for Applicants for Medical Residences (ENARM)
  • Although this situation is painful, it is not the first time that residents have organized a work stoppage because the same thing has happened in previous years.

The path to becoming a medical specialist is quite long and fraught with adversity. It is not enough to have the disposition, but several tests must be passed. On many occasions it is necessary to suffer exploitation but everything has a limit and that is why now a group of residents raised their voices to announce a work stoppage.

But first, what is a medical resident?

The question seems obvious but it is valid. Broadly speaking, he is a general practitioner who is on the training path to be a specialist. The problem lies in the conditions that must be faced during this stage.

According to Dr. Carolina Ortega Franco of the IMSS, medical residencies are a recent practice that emerged in the 1950s at the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore in the United States.

In this case, the young people who have already completed their Medical Degree decide to dedicate several more years to their training to focus on a specific area.

With respect to Mexico, to obtain a place in a hospital, you must first pass the National Examination for Applicants for Medical Residences (ENARM). It is a complex test but the biggest drawback is that there are very few places available. To date, only 40% of all applicants get a space.

But although obtaining a place is quite complicated, in reality the problems are generated later. Upon entering the residence, you must play the double role of student and worker. With this, the usual work 36-hour days without a break.

Throughout the duration of the residency, each training specialist receives a payment, although it is not yet defined whether it is a scholarship or a salary. Beyond the concept, what anyone wants is for their deposit to be punctual because the vast majority of young people live up to date. Unfortunately that doesn’t always happen.

Residents announce work stoppage

On this subject, Dr. Isabel Salas, who is R4 of Gynecology and Obstetrics, published a topic about her position and the reasons that led several residents to make this decision.

First of all, although she is doing her residency in a hospital in Jalisco, she is currently in the rural area of Moctezuma in Sonora. The reason is because his specialty requires him to complete four months of social service.

According to his testimony, any hospital must have accommodation space for residents. In the case of rural hospitals, there is no space of this type and therefore the young people were promised economic support of 4,800 pesos per month to pay the rent for a nearby room. Despite the promises, the deposit that the IMSS-Benestar should make has never arrived.

Due to the above and after more than a month of waiting, various residents from all over the country have decided to start a work stoppage. Their demand is quite simple: as long as they are not paid in full, they will not carry out their duties.

This situation is quite painful and more because it is not the first time it has happened. Similar incidents have been repeated in previous years and the authorities always make the same mistakes.
