A baby girl in Mexico was born with a tail, doctors have revealed. The rarest phenomenon was recorded less than 200 times only. The baby, who has not been identified, was born by caesarean section at a hospital in Nuevo León in northeastern Mexico. Her parents were healthy and in their late twenties. The doctors quickly noticed the 5.7 cm long tail.

While detailing the incident in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery Case Reports, doctors, led by Dr. Jose Ruada, believe that the case is the first ever recorded in Mexico. The doctors said that the baby was born at full term and there were no complications during the pregnancy, her parents had already had a baby before healthy son

The baby that was born was healthy, with brain, heart and hearing tests that showed normal results. Human tails are divided into two categories. ‘Pseudotails’ are growths that resemble a tail but are caused by spinal problems or tumors. But ‘true tails’ contain muscles, blood vessels and nerves but no bones – similar to those in animals.

Tests revealed that the tail was not the result of a spinal problem. The doctors operated on the baby and released her, they checked her again when she was two months old. Her weight and height were good. The surgeons removed the tail in a minor operation performed under local anesthesia. Further analysis of the tail revealed that it contained soft tissue, arteries and veins and bundles of nerves.
