The Governments of Mexico, Brazil y Colombia They are willing to promote agreements between the president Nicolas Maduro and the Oppositionfollowing last Sunday’s elections.

This was indicated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) In a joint statement with its Brazilian and Colombian counterparts, shared on its X account (@SRE_mx):

“We reiterate our willingness to support efforts for dialogue and the search for agreements that benefit the Venezuelan people.”

In the text, the Foreign Ministry, on behalf of the three nations, expresses solidarity with the Venezuelan people who “went en masse to the polls on July 28 to define their own future,” and highlights that the vote counting is being closely followed and therefore calls on the electoral authorities of that nation to:

“So that they can move forward expeditiously and make public the data broken down by voting table. Controversies about the electoral process must be settled through institutional channels.”
Thus, they call for impartial verification of the results, and therefore call on political and social actors:

“We must exercise maximum caution and restraint in our demonstrations and public events in order to avoid an escalation of violent episodes. Maintaining social peace and protecting human lives must be the priority concerns at this time.”

That is why they expressed, once again, “absolute respect for the sovereignty and will of the people of Venezuela.”

The statement was published after the call held by Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Gustavo Petro and Luis Ignacio Lula Da Silva, presidents of Mexico, Colombia and Brazil respectively, at noon on August 1.

Regarding communication, López Obrador said in his morning press conference that:

“Yes, we will probably speak on the phone today with President Lula and President Petro; at noon in Mexico City (…) we will talk about the positions that exist in the case of Venezuela.”

He also insisted on his position of waiting for the electoral authority to make a statement, and asked the parties to trust it, and reiterated Nicolás Maduro’s request that the electoral authority summon the participants to present the information they have:

“He himself -Maduro- maintains that he does not have all the minutes because, he maintains, and this must be proven, that there was a hack (…) but it is now up to the Electoral Court to carry out the investigation, listen to everyone, compile all the minutes, because that is what is established in its legal framework.”

He also questioned “why such a rush?”, since, according to him, the electoral authority of that nation has 30 days to resolve the situation, but he trusts that it will be less time and for that reason he repeated his accusations of “interference” by some governments, and in particular by the OAS, which has already asked for the arrest of Maduro:

“The OAS does not help, that is why we do not attend, because it seems like an appendix of hegemonic governments or conservative, right-wing, authoritarian governments, in fact, anti-democratic.”
