This was confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of this country after the diplomatic impasse due to the statements of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Mexico grants political asylum to Jorge Glas.

«After an exhaustive analysis of the information received, the Government of Mexico has decided to grant political asylum to Mr. Jorge David Glas Espinel, who is currently in the Mexican Embassy in Quito, which will be officially communicated to the Ecuadorian authorities along with the request to grant the respective safe passage,” the institution detailed.

And he also demanded that Ecuador “respect sovereignty, not infringe the Right to Asylum and comply with its international obligations, guarantee the inviolability of diplomatic missions and cease the policy of harassment and intimidation.”

“Mexico holds Ecuador responsible for any damage to the diplomatic headquarters, its accredited personnel and any person who is under the protection of the Mexican State in that country,” he added.

The decision was made official after declaring the Mexican Ambassador in Quito, Raquel Serur Smeke, persona ‘non grata’. The official must leave the country within 72 hours and, for this, López Obrador ordered that she be transported by an Air Force aircraft. Therefore, if Ecuador grants the corresponding safe passage they could leave with the official.

Prior to learning about this decision, the Chancellor of Ecuador, Gabriela Sommerfeld, in an interview in NotiMundo, pointed out that this situation causes tension because Mexico is meddling in Ecuadorian justice./El Expreso
