One of the most serious problems in Mexican health is the shortage of specialists and doctors. For decades, investment in personnel training was stopped and now the consequences are being faced. Within hospitals, doctors cannot handle so many patients and this is one of the reasons for the crowded waiting rooms.

With this in mind, actions have been taken in recent years to put an end to this situation. One of the main ones occurred in 2020 because the places in the National Exam for Applicants for Medical Residences (ENARM) were doubled so that more young people could study a specialty.

Thanks to the above, the head of the Ministry of Health (SSa), Jorge Alcocer Varelaindicated that the specialist shortage problem is about to be solved. He announced that at the beginning of this administration, more than 13,570 specialists were required, in accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Instead, Thanks to all the strategies that have been implemented, there are now almost nine thousand of these professionals. Therefore, before 2024 it is possible to aspire to meet the goal.

“Today, after many efforts, of motivation, of pointing out to the doctors and residents, they are residents, medical specialists who will go down in the history of Mexican health as key axes of quality medical care, with dignified, free and universal ethics. which is what is required for our Mexicans, if we think otherwise, we better dedicate ourselves to something else”.

Abandoned hospitals now serve

He also said that, at the beginning of this administration, In addition to the lack of personnel, there were also 327 abandoned medical units that have been put into operation. At present only 60 hospitals and 114 health centers are in the process of completion or rehabilitation.

He explained that the hiring of specialists, the rehabilitation of the infrastructure, the supply of medicines and the basicization of temporary personnel are the four main axes of federalization through the OPD IMSS-Bienestar. Currently, 22 federal entities participate voluntarily in this process.

Sending specialists to Zacatecas

As part of this initiative, Zacatecas now has 62 new base medical specialists. All were hired to provide care in IMSS and IMSS-Bienestar hospitals in this entity, as well as with 169 residents in IMSS-Bienestar.

The incorporation of specialists in surgery, gynecology, anesthesiology, family and internal medicine, and emergencies guarantees that the population of Zacatecas receives timely and quality medical care in the hospitals of this entity that is advancing in the process of transferring health services.

He pointed out that they are also working on the MAS-Well-being Care Model for Well-being. It is based on primary care, with essential public health functions, focused on people, families and communities, through the promotion, protection and prevention of diseases.

This model includes ethical and quality rehabilitation and palliative care, considering community participation and social determinants, for the well-being of people, especially those who do not have social security.

He indicated that the federalization of health services seeks to implement a design with central planning, 100 percent public, which promotes the prevention of chronic diseases and seeks the unification of public health hand in hand with state governments.
