A harrowing attempted robbery on Tuesday, December 9, has brought renewed attention too the escalating organized crime impacting residents of the Huitzilac area in the state of Morelos, Mexico. The incident, which involved a brazen daytime attack on a commuter, underscores the vulnerability of travelers along the Mexico-Cuernavaca free highway and the growing concerns surrounding the region’s security.

According to a local resident, the ordeal began at approximately 9:49 a.m. while traveling towards Mexico City. “We left home at 9:45 and at exactly 9:49 minutes, about 1,500 meters before entering Tres Marías, a white truck blocked our way,” the resident recounted. The vehicle, described as a recent model Tiguan, was used to box in the victim’s car.

“He blocked our way and Surprisingly, three men with balaclavas came out with weapons.and they targeted us, threatening us with an assault,” the resident stated. The speed of the attack left little time to react. A video of the incident shows the driver skillfully maneuvering to evade the assailants. The perpetrators pursued the victim for roughly 800 to 1,000 meters before disappearing as the victim approached Tres Marías.

The resident confirmed that shots were fired during the pursuit. “There were three detonations at the moment when I avoided the vehicle with the three hooded men with weapons, at least on three occasions I heard the shots, which fortunately did not hit the vehicle or us, that is, we were not injured.” The assailants were reportedly dressed in jeans, dark t-shirts, and balaclavas, and their vehicle lacked license plates.

The area where the attack occurred is known locally as the “triangle,” where the states of Morelos,the State of Mexico,and Mexico City converge. This convergence has sadly fostered an environment conducive to insecurity. While the area had experienced a period of relative calm, reports from neighbors suggest this incident is part of a disturbing pattern.

“It had been somewhat quiet, but when asking the neighbors after this event, we learned that there have been very frequent situations with just the same profile and the same strategy,” the resident explained.There are even reports circulating of similar vehicles being involved in other attempted robberies.
