The 28th and 29th immigrants to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar were determined tonight (Wednesday to Thursday) when Mexico and the United States joined the list.
The Mexicans did so with a 0-2 home win over El Salvador, with Carlos O’Reill Antona scoring in the 17th minute, and in the 43rd minute striker Raul Jimenez doubled from the penalty spot. The two attacking players set the result of the game that sent Mexico to the World Cup from second place in the North American home and is one place away from entering the top 1 of the draw tomorrow.
The United States rose from third place at home after a 2-0 loss to Costa Rica in San Jose. Juan Vargas in the 51st minute and Anthony Contreras in the 59th minute scored two quick goals en route to the playoffs for promotion to the World Cup against the New Zealand team. The Americans are now in the second tier of the lottery.
In unimportant games, Panama beat Canada 0-1 from a Gabriel Torres goal, and Jamaica beat Honduras 1-2 as Leon Bailey and Ravel Morrison arranged a makeover before the end of the first half after Angel Tahada’s goal in the 18th minute.
