(ANSA) – MEXICO CITY, SEPTEMBER 12 – The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced this morning that the reform of the judicial system has already been approved in 18 state congresses, becoming de facto constitutional. In a press conference held at the National Palace, Obrador announced that it is possible that on September 15, the day on which the country’s independence is celebrated, the text will be published in the Official Gazette of the Federation. So far the initiative – which according to the rules had to be approved by at least 17 state congresses – has already been ratified by the legislative seats of Oaxaca, Tabasco, Veracruz, Quintana Roo, Baja California Sur, Nayarit, Colima, Yucatán, Morelos, Baja California, Durango, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Campeche, Sinaloa, Guerrero, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas. The reform, which provides for the direct election of judges and magistrates, has been at the center of violent protests, with hundreds of demonstrators storming the Senate chamber two days ago to try to prevent its approval.
