Mexico City: There has been heavy violence in Sinaloa, Mexico, as drug mafia members clashed with the army. This happened when a rumor spread about the arrest of drug mafia El Chapo’s son in Sinaloa. After this rumor, the city was gripped by chaos. On Thursday, members of the Sinaloa Cartel set hundreds of buses and trucks on fire and blocked the roads while attacking the army. Most of the routes leading to the city have been closed after the violence. However, federal officials said that they have no information about any such arrest. El Chapo is called the godfather of the drug smuggling world. Zambada is accused of manufacturing and smuggling fentanyl and smuggling cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine. The US government had announced a reward of Rs 125 crore for Chapo’s arrest. He is currently in a US jail.
The Sun quoted local media as saying that violence broke out in the Sinaloan capital Culiacan as rumours spread that one of El Chapo’s sons, Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar, had been arrested on orders of Mexico’s Ministry of National Defense. The city was already tense after drug lord Ismael El Mayo Zambada and Joaquin Guzman Lopez, one of El Chapo’s sons, were arrested in July. In such a situation, the arrest of Guzman Salazar added fuel to the fire. This state has long been a stronghold of El Chapo, who is currently behind bars in the US. His sons are active in the state.
Violence over the arrest of drug mafias is not a new thing
Mexican authorities said Thursday that military personnel were attacked and roads were blocked in northern Sinaloa. The state police department said the violence erupted in an area just north of the state capital, Culiacan. Violence has erupted in the area in the past over arrests of members of the Dragúa cartel.
The violence has also affected students. The Autonomous University of Sinaloa, with around 170,000 students, suspended classes due to the violence. There were also reports of several public transport routes being suspended and traffic chaos as the population attempted to take refuge. State and municipal authorities have called on residents to remain calm. There have been no official reports yet of deaths, injuries or arrests in the violence.
