Mexico Bolsters Humanitarian Aid to Cuba Amidst Escalating US Sanctions

Mexico is dramatically increasing its support for Cuba, delivering vital aid and vocally condemning what it calls an “unfair energy siege” imposed by the United States. This surge in solidarity, rooted in the principles of Mexican Humanism, comes as Cuba faces a deepening humanitarian crisis exacerbated by tightened US sanctions.

The latest demonstration of support materialized on Tuesday, February 12th, with the arrival of the Mexican Navy ships Papaloapan and Holbox Island in Havana. The vessels transported approximately 814 tons of essential food and hygiene items, departing from the port of Veracruz on Sunday in a significant logistical undertaking.

“Mexican Humanism is also solidarity and fraternity among peoples,” emphasized a leading figure within the ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena), announcing a nationwide collection campaign to gather further assistance. Through social media channels, details of urgently needed supplies – including medications, non-perishable food, personal hygiene products, and even flashlights – were shared alongside a list of authorized collection centers across the country.

The outpouring of support extends beyond the government. Organizations like the Militant Solidarity Collective Va por Cuba and the Association of Cuban Residents in Mexico are actively mobilizing citizens to contribute supplies. This grassroots effort is a direct response to the intensifying US blockade of Cuba, which was further aggravated by a January 29th executive order signed by former US President Donald Trump. The order, declaring a national emergency, established tariffs on goods from countries supplying crude oil to Cuba.

International organizations have warned that restricting Cuba’s access to oil constitutes collective punishment and a grave violation of human rights, potentially paralyzing vital services. Some have even characterized the measures as bordering on genocide under international law.

“The humanism, dignity and brotherhood of Mexico are demonstrated,” stated Eugenio Martínez, the Cuban ambassador to Mexico, expressing profound gratitude for the aid and pledging that the Cuban people “will not forget the support and accompaniment” of Mexico.

President Claudia Sheinbaum has publicly reaffirmed Mexico’s commitment to Cuba’s sovereignty, stating on February 9th that her nation will continue to provide humanitarian assistance. She described the US actions as an “unfair energy fence,” echoing concerns raised by international bodies. A tweet from teleSUR TV on February 9th highlighted Sheinbaum’s firm stance: https://t.co/OzOgBtHRtb.

The current crisis underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics at play, with Mexico positioning itself as a staunch ally of Cuba in the face of sustained pressure from the United States. This commitment to international solidarity, guided by the principles of Mexican Humanism, signals a clear message of support for the Cuban people during a time of critical need.
