Mexico has suspended diplomatic relations with the Government of Ecuador, as ordered this Friday by the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
His statement comes after police officers stormed the Mexican Embassy in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas, who today was granted asylum by the Mexican Government after his admission last December.
“Alicia Bárcena, our Secretary of Foreign Affairs, has just informed me that police from Ecuador forcibly entered our embassy and detained the former vice president of that country who was a refugee and processing asylum due to the persecution and harassment he faces” , reported through his account in X.
The president of Mexico declared that this act was a flagrant violation of international law and the sovereignty of Mexico.
“This is a flagrant violation of international law and the sovereignty of Mexico, which is why I have instructed our chancellor to issue a statement regarding this authoritarian act, proceed legally and immediately declare the suspension of diplomatic relations with the government.” from Ecuador,” he added.
For her part, the Mexican Foreign Minister, Alicia Bárcena, confirmed the immediate breaking of diplomatic relations with Ecuador, maintaining that the entry of elements of the Ecuadorian police represents a violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
“In consultations with President López Obrador, given the flagrant violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the injuries suffered by Mexican diplomatic personnel in Ecuador, Mexico announces the immediate breaking of diplomatic relations with Ecuador,” he indicated in X.
According to the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the former Ecuadorian vice president was in the Mexican embassy in Ecuador since December 17, 2023.
However, on Friday night he entered the consular compound to apprehend Glas, where police could be seen climbing walls and fences of the diplomatic headquarters and then leaving that residence, which was heavily guarded by the military from early on, at one point. of tension between both governments.
The head of the Foreign Ministry and Political Affairs of the Embassy, Roberto Canseco, in statements to journalists, denounced that the Ecuadorian agents broke in and attacked the guard personnel of the diplomatic headquarters.
“This is totally unacceptable, this cannot be, it is barbarism,” said Canseco and assured that the agents hit him when he confronted them to try to prevent them from violating the space of the Mexican Embassy in Quito.
A source close to the events assured EFE that Glas was detained at the diplomatic unit and was transferred to a unit of the Prosecutor’s Office in Quito, although the Ecuadorian authorities, at the moment, have not commented on this case.
