The remains of at least 13 human bodies were found in refrigerators Sunday in Poza Rica near Veracruz, in a region of Mexico plagued by narco-violence. “Six people were arrested, probably related to these facts,” said the Veracruz state prosecutor in a brief statement to the press. And not 34, as indicated by several media, according to the magistrate.

The bodies were found by police who were chasing a man inside a building housing three kidnapped people. In this building, they found the human remains scattered inside black bags in several refrigerators. Other pieces of corpses were found in other accommodations.

Known for its coffee and vanilla, Veracruz is also a route used by drug traffickers to ship drugs to the United States. Located on the Gulf of Mexico, the state of Veracruz swung into violence in the 2010s, with traumatic episodes. For example, in September 2011, 35 corpses were dumped on the public highway in broad daylight in Boca del Río, south of Veracruz. Eleven corpses showing signs of torture were also discovered in this city in 2017.

Rivalries between criminal organizations

Former Governor Javier Duarte (2010-2016) was sentenced in 2018 to nine years in prison for money laundering and criminal association. Mexico has recorded more than 400,000 murders since 2006, and some 110,000 missing since the 1960s.

Most of these acts of violence are attributed to rivalries between criminal organizations, or to the response of the security forces. In 2006, the government of ex-president Felipe Calderon launched a military anti-drug offensive. Current President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador has said he prefers to tackle the roots of crime such as poverty and lack of opportunities for young people.
