Spectacle of superlatives: The longest cruise ship in the world, measuring 365 meters, set sail on its maiden voyage in the Caribbean on Saturday (local time) from its home port in Miami in the US state of Florida. The demand for the first trip on the “Icon of the Seas” was “unprecedented,” said Royal Caribbean. The ship, built in a Finnish shipyard, can accommodate more than 5,600 passengers, as well as 2,350 crew members.

The ship is divided into eight different areas and features seven swimming pools, nine whirlpools and a 17 meter high waterfall. Guests can choose between 40 different restaurants and bars. Entertainment will be provided by 50 musicians and comedians as well as a 16-piece orchestra.

The two billion dollar ship, which is five times larger than the “Titanic,” runs on liquefied natural gas (LNG). The “Icon of the Seas” will now spend a week in the Caribbean before returning to Miami.
