In an interview with The Telegraph, Caine expressed his concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic potentially marking the end of his career in 2020. However, his outlook changed when he accepted the role in “The Great Escaper,” stating that he was “so happy to do it” and admired the character of Bernie. Despite already being “sort of” retired, Caine acknowledged his age and physical limitations, admitting that he can’t walk properly.

He shared that the production team provided him with a walking stick for certain scenes, enabling him to film the required shots. Despite facing physical challenges, Caine has persevered, completing scenes in a single take before resigning himself to falling over.
Last year, Caine’s wife, Shakira, confirmed that he underwent a major operation for spinal stenosis, a condition that narrows the spinal canal and causes back and leg pain. While surgery is typically considered a last resort, Caine opted for the procedure after non-surgical treatments proved ineffective. The actor’s determination and resilience have allowed him to continue pursuing his passion despite these health setbacks.
“The Great Escaper” is set to hit cinemas on October 6, 2023.
