In the 90s, a generation of directors made a name for themselves by making video clips for the best-known artists of the time. David Fincher, Jonathan Glazer, Anton Corbijn… all of them would end up in a film industry that needed new voices and that saw in their styles – modern, avant-garde and without the stagnation of Hollywood – a perfect opportunity to revitalize itself. Among those names was Michel Gondry. The French director had become an icon directing the music videos for Björk, Massive Attack, The White Stripes and The Chemical Brothers.

His jump to the cinema could not have been better. Together with another totem of the cultural scene of the 90s – and of the most absolute modernity -, Charlie Kauffman, he wrote a surprising, original script that solidified into one of the most important and influential works for a generation. It was about Forget about me!, the terrible translation of Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. A film about the breakup of a couple who faced an experiment to erase the memories in which the other person appeared. A film as romantic as it is painful, an unprecedented look at romantic relationships that ended with the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and with the cult title label deservedly earned.
