Michelin-winning celebrity chef Marco Sacco has been jailed for two-and-a-half months and facing a hefty $23,000 settlement in connection with a wedding accident in 2021.

La Repubblica reports this.

It is noted that at a celebration at the Piccolo Lago di Verbania establishment, Sacco offered invited risotto with the addition of raw shellfish containing the norovirus virus. A short time after the banquet, complaints began from guests who experienced nausea, vomiting and other digestive problems. Some of the participants had to seek medical help.

A court in Italy sentenced 59-year-old chef and restaurant manager Raffaella Marchetti to punishment for careless handling and distribution of products hazardous to health. Both defendants were found guilty and received suspended sentences of two months and twenty days.

They were also fined $23 thousand: of this amount, $8.7 thousand must be paid as compensation to the newlyweds for ruining the celebration, and another $250 to each of the 53 guests. In addition, violators will have to cover almost $11 thousand in legal costs.

During the investigation, it was determined that the shellfish were infected with norovirus before they were served at the wedding feast. It should be noted that this disease poses a serious danger to the elderly, children and those with weakened immune systems.

It is alleged that the packaging of seafood did not indicate the need to cook it, as a result of which Sacco served the dish raw.

“The packaging from the manufacturer and the documentation indicated that shellfish are safe to eat raw. I have already prepared more than three thousand similar dishes,” Marco Sacco commented on the situation.

The fallout from this incident has made many Italians wary of eating fresh seafood, particularly raw oysters, mussels and clams.

Igles Corelli, chef and director of the culinary academy Gambero Rosso Academy, noted that Sacco should have cooked the shellfish in question at a temperature of about 64-65 degrees Celsius, as recommended.

Previously, Cursor reported that the famous chef shared the best recipe for fluffy rice in 8 minutes.
