Attorney Michelle Calvache has publicly exposed the pressures and manipulations that led to a controversial decision by the Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (CPCCS).
Calvache, a member of the CPCCS, denounced that they were forced to modify voting results against established regulations, citing threats of impeachment as a determining factor.
“They forced us to change the results and go against our rules. How can they force us to do something like that, even more so being a lawyer, knowing that it is illegal?” Calvache stated during an interview with Carlos Vera on Radio Centro.
The lawyer also mentioned that two members of the Council, Juan Esteban Guarderas and Johana Verdesoto, were facing political trials, which likely influenced their position on the vote.
Calvache explained that she and other councillors initially opposed modifying the results, but that Guarderas’ consent allowed for reconsideration that benefited certain candidates. She claimed the pressure was intense during the session, with the National Assembly demanding rapid changes that violated established regulations.
Calvache expressed surprise and lack of transparency in the process, highlighting Guarderas’ vote in favor of reconsideration despite his initial opposition. She also criticized the inadequate handling of citizen objections during the process.
