Michoacán: Students Receive Free Internet & Teleférico Access | D4TA Program

by Priyanka Patel

Uruapan, Michoacán – Nearly 500 students at the Colegio de Estudios Científicos y Tecnológicos de Michoacán (Cecytem) in Uruapan will gain access to free internet service through the state’s D4TA, Datos Gratis program, officials announced Monday. The initiative, aimed at bridging the digital divide, provides students with four gigabytes of data per month, along with unlimited access to popular social media platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook. This move comes as access to reliable internet becomes increasingly crucial for educational success and participation in the modern economy.

Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla emphasized the program’s potential to support students at Cecytem Uruapan, a school known for its strong performance in science and technology competitions at the state, national, and international levels. “D4TA is a plan tailored for each of you, with calls, messages, and unlimited access to social networks,” Ramírez Bedolla explained during the delivery of the SIM cards and chips. “Today, we cannot have a full life without internet, but neither can we investigate or stay updated.” The program’s rollout reflects a growing recognition of internet access as a fundamental necessity, not a luxury, for students in Michoacán.

A Collaborative Effort to Expand Digital Access

The D4TA program is a result of collaboration between the state government and the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), Mexico’s federal electricity commission. The CFE donated 200,000 chips to support the initiative, as part of the broader “Plan Michoacán por la Paz y la Justicia,” a state-level plan focused on peace and justice. The state government is committing to cover the costs of 116,000 internet plans for students enrolled in public high schools, technological institutes, and universities across the state. This financial commitment underscores the state’s dedication to ensuring equitable access to digital resources.

According to Mariana Sosa Olmeda, Director General of the Instituto de Educación Media Superior y Superior, 493 students at Cecytem Uruapan have already registered for the program and are eligible to activate their chips and SIM cards to initiate utilizing the free data. The activation process is designed to be straightforward, ensuring students can quickly benefit from the program. The state government has not yet released a timeline for expanding the program to other schools and institutions, but officials have indicated that further rollout is planned.

Beyond Internet Access: New Transportation Options for Students

The governor’s visit to Cecytem Uruapan also included an announcement regarding a new transportation option for students and faculty. Ramírez Bedolla revealed plans to deliver 560 cards for the city’s new teleférico (cable car) system to the school. The teleférico, scheduled to open on April 18th, is expected to significantly reduce commute times, offering a faster and safer way for students and teachers to travel, with a journey time of under 30 minutes. This investment in infrastructure aims to improve accessibility and enhance the overall educational experience for students at Cecytem Uruapan.

The addition of the teleférico is particularly significant for students who may face challenges with transportation due to distance or limited public transit options. The cable car system represents a modern solution to a common logistical problem, potentially improving student attendance and participation in extracurricular activities. Details about the teleférico’s route and operating hours can be found on the official website of the Michoacán state government.

Addressing the Digital Divide in Michoacán

The D4TA program and the investment in the teleférico are part of a larger effort to address the persistent digital divide in Michoacán. Access to affordable and reliable internet remains a significant barrier for many students, particularly those from low-income families or rural areas. The state government recognizes that bridging this gap is essential for promoting educational equity and economic opportunity.

The program’s focus on providing access to social media platforms is also noteworthy. These platforms have become integral to students’ social lives and, increasingly, their educational experiences, facilitating communication, collaboration, and access to information. By providing unlimited access to these platforms, the D4TA program aims to empower students to fully participate in the digital world.

Accompanying Governor Ramírez Bedolla during the announcement were Raúl Zepeda Villaseñor, Secretary of Government; Juan Paulo Granados Gómez, Director of Digital Government; Juan Carlos Velasco Procell, Director General of Cecytem; Yuliana Gómez Cortés, Director of Cecytem Uruapan; Martín López Ortiz, Director General of Regional Units of the State Secretariat of Education, as well as teachers and students who will benefit from the program.

The next step for the D4TA program is the continued distribution of chips and SIM cards to students across the state. The government has not yet announced a specific timeline for this rollout, but officials have indicated that they are working to ensure that all eligible students have access to the program as quickly as possible. For updates on the program’s progress and eligibility requirements, students and families are encouraged to visit the official website of the Michoacán state government.
