This week a new episode of Dark Side of the Ring about the career of the legendary Abdullah the Butcher (Larry Shreve).

In this, the subject of the demand of the fighter Devon Nicholson (Hannibal) to Abdullah was touched on, from which Nicholson won a million-dollar sum that Abdullah has not paid to this day.

Shreve has stated in interviews that the reason he didn’t show up for court is because he couldn’t read the subpoenas, as he couldn’t read and write. But this statement has been disputed by some within the same episode.

Nicholson first said that he does not believe the story of not being able to read or write, as he has seen Abdullah read restaurant menus and letters from him. He noted that Abdullah has owned several businesses over the years and has signed contracts with WCW and Japan.

Shreve’s sister however backs up the story that he can’t read or write.

Mick Foley, who was a part of the episode, said he knows Abdullah could read a menu as they would be eating out three times a day, so he’s not quite sure if Abdullah had that problem or not. If he can’t, Foley is surprised that he has been as successful as he has.

Hugo Savinovich was also stunned by that fact, saying in the episode that he never heard that Abdullah couldn’t read or write. He confessed that he could believe that Abdullah only had a second grade education.

Despite his problems, Abdullah may not be done battling in the ring. “People still want to see me. The only thing I need is my hip replacement,” Abdullah told “Stories with Brisco And Bradshaw“. “My body is in top shape so all I can do is autograph sessions, that’s all I can do. But, when I get surgery, maybe at 93 I could get in the ring at 94, I mean 84!,” he said.
