A few days ago, Pat Gelsinger, the CEO of Intel, publicly said that his company should take more money from the CHIPS Act for being American compared to Samsung or TSMC. As it is not the only American that will access these funds, Micron has requested more money from its Government to finance the expansion of production in its centers of Boise (Idaho) and Clay (New York) based on that CHIPS Law.

Micron plans to invest $15 billion in expanding its production in Boise, which would also create around 17,000 direct and indirect jobs. But in principle, public intervention was not planned, since, for example, to access these funds you have to commit not to increase manufacturing in China.

In fact, Micron had planned to expand its production in China with an investment of $600 million, but now it is to be imagined that it will decline after submitting a formal application to access CHIPS funds. It is not clear how much money he has asked for from his government, but the total investment will be around $51bn to be spread over many manufacturers. It also covers investment in R&D companies, although at the moment there is no major plan announced in this regard, as well as in other technological sectors and not only that of semiconductors. So it’s not as big a cake as it seems.
