Micron Company (Micron) is establishing a new memory production plant in Idaho, USA, with an investment of approximately 15 billion dollars. This will be the first souvenir manufacturing plant in 20 years to be built in the USA. A few weeks ago, Micron announced that it plans to make a series of investments in the US once the CHIPS Act is passed. The announcement of the new plant is the first move the company is making following the signing of the law last month. According to the company’s estimate, the plant will employ about 2,000 workers directly, and another 17,000 workers indirectly (subcontractors and service providers).

The factory will be built in the city of Boise, where the company’s headquarters is located and where it has a production plant, employing a total of 6,000 people. The establishment of the plant is the first step in the company’s huge plan, which includes investments in the amount of approximately 150 billion dollars by the end of the next decade. In the first phase, 40 billion dollars will be invested until 2030 in the establishment of production infrastructures in the USA which will employ about 40,000 workers, including about 5,000 workers directly by Micron. The president and CEO of Micron, Sanjay Marotra, said that the law “will make it possible to increase the weight of the production of memory components in the USA, from about 2% of the world’s consumption today, to about 10% of the world’s consumption by the end of 2040”.

In the third quarter of 2022, Micron’s sales grew by about 16% compared to the corresponding quarter, and amounted to about 8.6 billion dollars. Of this, 73% were sales of DRAM components and 26% of NAND memories. The company’s main markets are computers and communication networks (45%), mobile accessories (22%), storage (16%) and embedded systems (17%). The company ended the quarter with a net profit of 2.9 billion dollars. Its sales in 2021 amounted to approximately 27.7 billion dollars. Micron is traded on NASDAQ according to a market value of approximately 62.1 billion dollars.
