Two months before the US presidential election, the meeting was eagerly awaited. For the first time, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump will face each other this Tuesday, September 10, during the broadcast of the debate live by the ABC channel.

For more than an hour, the vice-president and former president will confront their two different visions on the future of America. But strict rules are in place for this argument, which can only be one.

One and only debate

This debate, which will last 90 minutes, is organized by the American channel ABC. Scheduled for the night of Tuesday September 10 to Wednesday September 11, at 3 am French time, the exchange between the Republican candidate and the Democratic candidate will be broadcast live, with two commercial breaks.

The event, hosted by ABC anchors Linsey Davis and David Muir, will take place at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in a private room.

The location was not chosen at random. Pennsylvania is considered the most important of the swing states, those states that can swing Democratic and Republican in November. Even from this date, no other debate is planned before the vote on November 5.

No notes are prepared in advance

After weeks of negotiations on the place, date and procedures, the ABC channel presented the strict rules that will govern this debate, accepted by both stations. Both candidates will remain behind the scenes for the entire debate.

They will only allow you a pen, some sheets of paper and a bottle of water. Props to support exhibits such as notes prepared in advance will not be allowed. The Vice President and former President will not be allowed to contact you during business breaks.

Questions and answers

Both candidates would not offer opening comments. This will be questions and answers only. Everyone will have two minutes to answer a question, while two minutes will be reserved for the opponent to answer.

An additional minute will be allowed for any “additional comments, information, or response”, explained the ABC. At the end of the debate, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris will have two minutes to present their decisions. After drawing many, the former president gets the right to choose to go last.

Only debaters will be allowed to ask questions, and no topics or questions will be shared with either party, according to the rules.

The microphone cut

As during the debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump at the end of June, the candidates’ microphones will be turned off when they do not have the floor. A law which has been at the heart of heated discussions in recent weeks between the two parties.

That Kamala Harris wants to keep the microphones open, in the hope of seeing her Republican rival stop unexpectedly and launch into the digressions of which it is customary. In contrast, Donald Trump’s team refused, accusing the Democrats of wanting to change the rules on which they had already agreed.

In the end it was the ABC channel which made the decision: the microphones of the two candidates would only open when they were given the floor.
