It’s glitter mania even in cosmetics. The iridescent “glitter” used to decorate handicrafts, wrapping paper, cards – now widely used in make-up products as well – are a polluting material that is difficult to dispose of. These are microscopic fragments of plastic and aluminum which, dispersed in the environment, become part of the food chain, threatening ecosystems. For this reason, researchers at the University of Cambridge have studied a biodegradable alternative to glitter, based on vegetable fibres. Edited by Sofia Gadici
