In collaboration with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), part of the US Department of Energy, Microsoft has discovered a new material that can reduce the use of lithium in batteries by 70%, in just 80 hours of searching through 32 million materials with the help of artificial intelligence. Researchers used the Azure Quantum Elements tool developed by Microsoft to examine potential new materials that could be used in lithium-ion batteries, and identified a material not found in nature that could reduce the amount of lithium used in batteries by up to 70%.
