Microsoft is laying off 1,900 employees in the gaming division, representing close to 9% of the 22,000 employees in the division, according to a report on the CNBC website from today (Thursday) based on a memo sent to employees. The move starts about three months after the technology giant received the approvals for the purchase of computer game maker Activision Blizzard for $69 billion. This is expected to be its biggest purchase ever.

“We have made the painful decision to reduce our gaming division to the extent of approximately 1,900 jobs,” the memorandum reads, “we are committed to conducting the procedure in the most considerate way possible.”

The Verge website reported that most of the cut jobs will be in the ranks of Activision. Activision’s president, Mike Ibarra, also announced his departure from the company.

It was also written to the employees that “we will continue to invest in areas that will help the company grow and support the strategy of bringing more games to more players around the world.”

The layoffs at Microsoft come after similar announcements recently published by major technology companies, among them Google, Amazon and SAP.

Activision Blizzard is a developer and marketer of several major gaming brands such as Call of Duty and Diablo. Its subsidiary Kind developed the successful game Candy Crush.
