Corporate customers of technology giant Microsoft are victims of a computer hack. Here’s what we know about this gigantic outing with global results this Friday.

What happened ?

Announcements of various services and infrastructure affected by computer failure on the Windows operating system are increasing on Friday morning. According to our information, this will follow a problem that occurred during an external software update carried out by the cybersecurity company Crowdstrike.

In a message titled “Service Disruption,” Microsoft said users “may not be able to access many Microsoft 365 apps and services.”

Microsoft added that it is “committed to managing this incident with the highest priority and urgency, while continuing to address the ongoing impact for the remaining Microsoft 365 applications that are in a compromised state.”

“It’s unknown, I have no words, it’s crazy,” a cybersecurity expert told Le Parisien. “The most credible theory at the time is that a Windows file necessary for the computer to work was isolated by mistake and caused the system to crash,” he adds.

The National Information Systems Security Agency (ANSSI), which investigated the origin of the failure, indicated to Le Parisien that “no element in the state” suggested that this failure was caused by a cyber attack.

Secretary of State for Digital Marina Ferrari tweeted that the exit was “supervised at the highest level” of the state.

Airplanes are on the ground

International air traffic is greatly affected. Major US airlines, including Delta, United and American Airlines, have grounded all flights due to “communication issues”. Disruptions are expected in Hong Kong.

In Europe, Amsterdam-Schiphol, Berlin and Zurich international airports and “all Spanish airports” are blocked. Delays in passenger availability are expected. Air service from Berlin was suspended until 11 a.m., before partially resuming. Check-in times and waiting times will be longer for passengers.

In the Netherlands, Eindhoven airport in the south of the country was affected as well as the Transavia airline and some Dutch hospitals.

Low-cost airline Ryanair in turn announced disruptions, as did Indian airlines Akasa Air and SpiceJet. Ryanair advises “all passengers to arrive at the airport at least three hours before the scheduled departure time”. KLM has also suspended these “many” flights.

In France, Air France announced “disruption at certain terminals” but Paris airports appeared to be closed at 10 am. Existing flights are not affected, it has been added within the company without specifying which destinations are affected.

On the other hand, the situation has an “impact on the services of the flights related to Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Paris-Orly: reduction in registrations, delays and temporary suspension of certain flight programs”. refers to the ADP team, which mobilizes its team “to lead and implement ideas on site”.

No incidents were reported in Beauvais (Oise), where low-cost airlines Ryanair and Wizz Air operate from.

The world economy is slowing down

Global stock markets are in sharp decline. Indexes of London and the Milan Stock Exchange did not show any rate of change at the regular opening time at 7 am GMT, and started trading around twenty minutes later. The exchange of shares, however, takes place normally on the Milan Stock Exchange, according to a spokesperson for Borsa Italiana.

Around 9:15 am GMT, London fell by 0.36%, Paris by 0.38%, Frankfurt by 0.74% and Milan by 0.41%.

Hong Kong fell significantly by 2.03%, while Shanghai gained 0.17%. No practical decisions to support the country’s economy came out of the central committee meeting of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the “Third Plenum” held this week.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei index fell 0.16% and the supplier of precision tools for the semiconductor company Disco Corp. fell 4.63% after the results were below expectations for its first quarter.

On Thursday, the New York Stock Exchange closed lower, with investors fleeing mega-caps for the second time in a row as the uncertainties of American politics began to weigh on.

Fears about the semiconductor sector, including possible new US sanctions against China, are weighing on markets.

In Britain, the largest rail operator fears last-minute cancellations.

TV channels stop

This output also has consequences for television channels in France. Channel TF1 indicated this Friday that it cannot offer “the same program” as usual. Host Christophe Beaugrand apologized to viewers after a “big decision in management”.

Several channels of the Canal + group stopped broadcasting this Friday, the group confirmed on X. In the United States, the SkyNews channel stopped broadcasting for a few hours, issuing an information flag.

The Olympic computer system crashed

A week before Paris 2024, the organizer of the Olympic Games confirmed to Le Parisien that “the computer systems were damaged”. “We have implemented contingency plans because our computer systems that run on Windows are affected by this outage,” the organization said.

Neither ticket nor field conference services are affected.

Australia struck first

Australian businesses were the first to announce early that they were hit by a “large-scale technology outbreak”, the country’s cybersecurity authority, Australia’s ABC TV, said.

“Current information indicates that this outage is related to a technical issue with a third-party software platform used by the affected businesses,” the office of Australia’s Cyber frontward (America (V)

Public broadcaster ABC said its systems were paralyzed by a “serious” problem. Photos posted online showed long lines at Sydney Airport, the country’s largest international airport, which told AFP some airline and airport services were affected.

Elsewhere in the country, some self-checkout terminals at one of the country’s largest supermarket chains are displaying error messages. Finally, telecommunications company Telstra also said that some of its systems had been disrupted.
