Microsoft and the investment giant BlackRock announced yesterday that they have joined forces with other funds to raise up to $100 billion to finance data centers and infrastructures that promote the artificial intelligence (IA).

The association includes the multinational capital Global Infrastructure Partners already the investment firm in advanced technology MGX, according to a joint statement.

“We are committed to ensuring that the IA help advance innovation and drive growth in all sectors of the economy,” said the executive director of Microsoft, Satya Nadella.

The company that created the Windows operating system has made large outlays of funds to AI, such as contributing more than 10 billion dollars to OpenAIthe parent company behind the famous chatbot ChatGPT.

“The capital expenditure required for AI infrastructure and the new energy that powers it is beyond what any single company or government can fund,” said Microsoft President Brad Smith.

The association will initially seek 30 billion dollars private equity from investors, with plans to raise that amount to $100 billion, including debt financing, the companies said.

Investments to expand or build data centers and create new energy sources for them will focus primarily on USA, and the remainder will be carried out in partner countries.

Nvidia, the leading manufacturer of chips used in artificial intelligence, will bring its expertise to the partnership, and Microsoft will provide technical advice and financing, according to the statement.

The development of artificial intelligence requires enormous computing capacity, provided by servers hosted in data centers.

Its energy consumption is colossal and threatens to saturate the American power grid if its capabilities are not expanded by adding new resources.
