Microsoft Tests Upgraded Cloud Rebuild System for Windows 11

Microsoft is testing an upgraded Cloud Rebuild system in Windows 11 Insider Experimental Preview Build 26340.9502, rolling out secure drive sanitization and remote IT reset capabilities.

Windows 11 Insider Experimental Preview Build 26340.9502, released on Sept 18, 2026, is currently testing the updated Cloud Rebuild feature alongside the remove & sanitise files option. Instead of relying on local recovery partitions that often fail alongside a corrupted operating system, the utility communicates directly with Windows servers over Ethernet or Wi-Fi to fetch fresh operating system files and exact hardware drivers.

Reinstalling a Windows operating system has long meant hunting for USB thumb drives, downloading ISO images, and wrangling missing drivers. Microsoft introduced Cloud Rebuild to restore a Windows 11 PC straight from the Windows Recovery Environment.

Unlike the Cloud rebuild experience, the command line does not reinstall Windows. To fix the non-booting system, you can alternatively utilize Recovery Drive – Microsoft Support, Reinstall Windows with the installation media – Microsoft Support, or factory recovery media supplied by the hardware vendor.

Secure Data Wipe Options

Selecting the Remove & sanitise files option commands the underlying storage hardware to execute a firmware-level wipe before the operating system reinstalls, making personal files significantly harder to retrieve. Standard local resets clear user accounts, applications, and settings, but Microsoft acknowledges that specialized forensic tools can still recover residual data from storage drives.

Users managing multi-drive setups can choose whether to format only the primary Windows drive or trigger a complete erase across every disk connected to the machine simultaneously. During data sanitization, Microsoft advises keeping the device plugged into a power source because the operation can take considerably longer depending on drive capacities and specifications, with the system appearing idle while sectors are overwritten.

Because Windows simply dispatches the purge command to the storage drive and listens for status reports, the operating system cannot independently verify whether a specific SSD manufacturer fully executed the sanitization process internally. For environments bound by strict compliance mandates or handling highly sensitive data, the company recommends consulting drive vendors directly or deploying manufacturer-provided Secure Erase utilities.

Remote Administrative Resets

The updated Recovery Configuration Service Provider lets administrators configure and trigger cloud rebuilds remotely. Enterprise system administrators using mobile device management platforms like Microsoft Intune can deploy a remote reset command to restore uncooperative or compromised client machines back to a clean baseline.

Once initiated, the target device downloads its replacement image and drivers directly from Windows Update, proceeding through the standard out-of-box experience before managed units re-provision automatically through Windows Autopilot, Microsoft Intune, Backup for Organizations, and OneDrive.

Network Issues and Hardware Requirements Cause Cloud Rebuild Errors

Successful execution of a cloud rebuild relies on a healthy local Windows Recovery Environment and stable internet connectivity.

  • Error code 0x800704C6: Indicates the device lacks an active network connection, as internet access is mandatory to pull the operating system image and drivers. The recovery environment currently supports WPA-2 Personal Wi-Fi connections alongside active Ethernet links.
  • Error code 0xc1900200: Signals that the hardware fails to meet Windows 11 minimum requirements, most frequently because the Trusted Platform Module is disabled in the UEFI or BIOS setup menu.
  • Error code 0xc1900224: Points to a missing required device driver on Windows Update, requiring recovery media if the operating system cannot boot.

Microsoft continues to designate Cloud Rebuild as a preview feature, recommending its evaluation solely on non-production hardware while user telemetry and feedback are gathered prior to a general release.
