Microsoft has now added the drawing program Paint 3D to the list of deprecated features and apps. On November 4th of this year, the company plans to remove the software from the Microsoft Store.

“Paint 3D was pre-installed on some Windows 10 devices,” Microsoft explains in the details, “but it was not pre-installed on Windows 11 devices.” It remains unclear whether the software was used by many or just a few. Microsoft does not provide any numbers.

However, Microsoft suggests closing the emerging gap with other programs that come with Windows. According to them, 2D content could be viewed and edited with the traditional Paint or the Photos app. For 3D content, the 3D Viewer would be suitable – although it must first be installed under Windows 11.

The discontinuation means that Paint 3D will disappear from the MS Store on November 4th and will no longer be installable from there. It will also no longer receive updates, including security updates. Paint 3D now also displays a warning upon opening, indicating that it has been discontinued.

Unlike Paint 3D, Microsoft is actively continuing the development of the mentioned alternatives Paint and Photos. Some features even include AI functionalities, like background removal for subjects. The bundled tools are thus constantly improving and becoming more powerful.

Microsoft does not provide a reason for why Paint 3D is being retired now. It is possible that too many of its features already exist in the other programs, or that the user numbers no longer justify further development efforts.
