Microsoft’s classic app Notepad may soon get an artificial intelligence (AI) upgrade. The latest news shows that Microsoft may add a new feature called “Cowriter” to Notepad to assist users in document writing.

As discovered by Windows enthusiast PhantomOcean3, this new feature appears in the latest version of Notepad, v11.2312.17.0. Cowriter features include options to rewrite text, change the tone and format of text, and make text longer or shorter. The feature’s icon shows the number of points available, while the string indicates that the user may have a limited number of uses, which are updated periodically.

Microsoft has been investing heavily in AI, so Notepad’s expected AI integration is no surprise. The company invested $10 billion in OpenAI. Microsoft has been actively advancing in the field of AI, such as integrating Microsoft Copilot into Windows 11 and integrating Microsoft 365 Copilot into the Office application suite.

However, Notepad’s main appeal has always been its simplicity. People continue to use Notepad to quickly record things without having to deal with cumbersome functions. Adding AI writing functionality to Notepad may seem like overkill, especially considering that Notepad lacks more important features such as spell checking, cloud synchronization, etc. The app that most people use for long-form writing has many other features that Notepad lacks, and Microsoft’s ultimate goal for Notepad’s AI integration is unclear.

Currently, Microsoft has not confirmed this feature, but given that AI is currently a hot trend, this feature is likely to be implemented.
