Steven Höfner heads the Konrad Adenauer Foundation office in the West Bank. In the conversation, he explains what alternatives there are to the two-state solution in the Middle East and why he hopes for a solution despite the escalation.
Mr. Höfner, after Hamas’ attack on Israel, calls for a two-state solution in the Middle East are becoming louder again. Both Israel and the Palestinians would then have their own state. How likely is that?
First of all, we have to clarify what the two-state solution means. I believe that the two-state solution based on the Oslo Accords is no longer realistic, as the last few years have already shown. But I wouldn’t go so far as to rule out a two-state solution in principle. Although it seems very unrealistic at the moment, a rapprochement can also happen again, especially if the Israeli and Palestinian societies become tired of conflict and war.
