Middle East Institute: Haftar’s Moves Toward Algeria Attempt to Link Libya to Pro-Russian African Corps

by times news cr

The Middle East Media Research Institute said that Haftar’s forces’ movements towards the Algerian border are an attempt to link Libya more directly to the emerging Sahel alliance of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, which is loyal to Russia.

The institute added in a report entitled “The Rise of Saddam Haftar,” that the latter is the one who led the recent movements, and his name has been linked to the Tariq bin Ziyad Brigade, which is accused of committing war crimes, human rights violations, and corruption.

The institute explained that the situation in Libya is not as it seems, as the army is made up of groups of militias allied to control the ground, and said that the real power has nothing to do with good governance, as much as it has to do with the flow of money, according to its description.

The Presidency of the Ground Forces affiliated with Haftar had previously announced the movement of its forces towards the southwest to the areas of Sabha, Ghat, Murzuq, Al-Qatrun, Adre and Brak Al-Shati with the aim of what it called strengthening border security.

The American newspaper Bloomberg revealed Russia’s intention to form a combat group of 20,000 soldiers under the name “African Corps” to carry out operations in 5 African countries.

The newspaper added that by mid-2024, the “African Corps” will operate in Burkina Faso, Libya, Mali, the Central African Republic and Niger, and will take over the work of the Wagner military company.

According to the newspaper, the Russian Corps will make the Central African Republic its new regional headquarters, revealing that Moscow is planning to recruit former Wagner fighters and new recruits to join the Corps.
