Middlesbrough Draw With Cardiff As Will Lankshear Scores Equaliser

Cardiff City surrendered a two-goal halftime lead away to Middlesbrough in a 2-2 draw at the Riverside, as Will Lankshear struck his 11th goal of the season to cap a second-half comeback.

Jack Moylan broke the deadlock midway through the first half by collecting a pass from Ollie Tanner outside the penalty area, executing a sharp stepover against Neto Borges, and firing a low right-footed shot past goalkeeper Radek Vitek at the near post, as reported by RTE. The strike marked Moylan’s third goal in five days following his opening brace in a 5-1 victory over Watford.

Cardiff doubled their advantage right before the interval. Tanner drove down the right flank, cut inside Adilson Malanda, and curled a picturesque shot into the far corner. Boro had created chances through Callum Brittain and Kyle Joseph, but found themselves trailing by two goals at the break after failing to convert their openings.

Kim Hellberg Restructures Middlesbrough at Halftime

Facing a two-goal deficit against a visiting side that controlled the ball, Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg turned to his bench for the second half. He introduced league top scorer Will Lankshear alongside United States midfielder Sebastian Berhalter.

We needed fresh legs up top in some way to press a team that has been, up to this day, the most ball possession team and with the most in-the-box touches.

Hellberg explained that resting his primary scorer initially was a necessary measure to manage player workloads across a demanding campaign, noting that Lankshear joined the squad late without a proper preseason.

Second-Half Surge Secures Riverside Draw for Boro

The tactical intervention paid immediate dividends. Thirteen minutes after the restart, Brittain delivered a low cut-back from the right channel, allowing Tommy Conway to meet the ball and drill it home to reduce the deficit. Just three minutes later, Lankshear collected the ball near the edge of the penalty area and curled a low shot into the bottom corner to equalize.

Cardiff manager Brian Barry-Murphy reflected on the tactical dilemma of facing a surging home side after holding a comfortable lead.

I’ve been in those positions where you come to a stadium like this against a team like this, and at half-time when you’re 2-0 up, you want to be conservative and hold on to what you have, but we have to push our players and our intention was to be even more aggressive in the second half and try and push on.

Late Red Card and Championship Standings

The visitors were reduced to 10 men with seven minutes remaining in regulation when Gabriel Osho received a straight red card for a reckless tackle on Lankshear directly in front of the technical area. Despite having a numerical advantage for the closing stages, Middlesbrough could not find a winner, extending their unbeaten league run to nine matches and keeping themselves firmly positioned in second place.

Cardiff managed to stem the late pressure and secure a hard-earned point away from home, leaving the Riverside Stadium with a share of the spoils.

It was a very tough game for ourselves, as we expected.
