Migdal Insurance completed a project to implement Nutnix systems as infrastructure for the DMZ system (the network that separates the protected private network from the public network) and for the VDI system (virtual workstations).

In the DMZ environment, an array of dozens of virtual servers running on the Nutnix Hyperconverged (HCI) platform including the Nutnix AHV virtualization layer was established. The virtual servers run on HPE servers.

Also, the Nutanix Flow micro-segmentation solution was integrated for the purpose of securing the information while protecting the communication access on the basis of micro-segmentation, which makes it possible to create protection rules for internal and external traffic for all the virtual servers in the solution, thus implementing a high level of security even within the network. At the same time, Migdal and Nutanix carried out a project to establish an infrastructure for the VDI (virtual endpoint computers) system in Migdal.

In the first phase, the Nutnix HCI platform is used as infrastructure for hundreds of virtual endpoints of the technology division in the tower at both sites to create redundancy. The move is part of a strategy that began during the Corona period to move more Migdal employees to work with lean workstations, which allow working in the office or remotely in a simple and easy way. The Nutnix solution is integrated with the Citrix VDI system on HPE servers. The scope of the project is estimated at millions of shekels.

“Migdal has been adopting the Cloud First strategy in recent years, in which we are in the process of transferring applications and infrastructure to the cloud based on business, operational and security readiness. At the same time, we are transferring all the computers in the company to lean workstations using VDI,” says Yigal Ahronovitz, director of operations and infrastructure at Migdal . “Out of the Dual Vendor strategy, after many years of working with a central provider for the virtual infrastructures at Migdal, we decided to integrate another provider and thus increase the competition between providers and avoid the inherent risk associated with one provider. Of the existing options that were examined, Nutnix was chosen for the two main projects that were on the agenda” .

According to Aharonovitz, “The Nutnix platform and its solutions are very simple and quick to install and operate. It provides security, stability and survivability at a high level and operates without malfunctions, as is required of a financial entity such as Migdal. In addition, Nutnix offers attractive costs and licensing agreements compared to its competitors.”

“Finally,” says Aharonovitz, “the responsiveness of the Nutnix team to our requests and needs was very high. They provided us with a quick, high-quality and professional response to all inquiries and also assisted in the training of Migdal’s staff.”

Regarding the implementation of VDI with a Nutanix platform, Aaronovitz says: “The team of developers and technology that works today with VDI from the office or from home discovered that despite their high demands on the systems, the performance was not compromised and in addition they receive a high level of business continuity – the computers are available at any given moment And the developers can now manage the backup and recovery themselves.

Migdal achieved great savings in physical space, in the purchase of computers and in the maintenance of the computers. The ROI in VDI and moving to lean computing is absolutely clear. The company’s plan is to move all of the company’s employees to work in the VDI model, so that at the end of the process all of the company’s employees will work with lean computing on top of Nutnix’s solutions on-prem or in the cloud.”

“In the future,” says Aharonovitz, “we would like to examine the Nutnix platform as an infrastructure for Red Hat’s OpenShift as well as an option for the company’s large databases.”
