Mikaela Shiffrin is now just seven victories from the World Cup record.

The American Mikaela Shiffrin, already victorious on Tuesday, won the second giant of the Alpine Skiing World Cup disputed on Wednesday in Semmering (Austria), her 79th victory, which brings her closer to the record of her compatriot Lindsey Vonn (82).

Despite several errors, Shiffrin edged the Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami by 10 hundredths and the Italian Marta Bassino by 47 hundredths.

In the lead after the first run, world champion Lara Gut-Behrami made several mistakes on the second course which cost her victory against Shiffrin, who was also far from perfect in the second act.

But the two skiers had created a sufficient gap in the first run to share the first two places, in particular on Bassino, who still validated a sixth consecutive podium in giant.

With her 5th victory of the season, Shiffrin is approaching at 27 the female success record of her compatriot Lindsey Vonn (82) and the absolute record of Swede Ingemar Stenmark (86).

Holder of the title of the big crystal globe, which she has already won four times, Mikaela Shiffrin is off to a superb season and now has a 305-point lead in the general classification over the Italian Sofia Goggia, who made the stalemate on the Austrian stage.

With a slalom scheduled for Thursday, the American has the opportunity to achieve the same hat-trick as in 2016 (two victories in giant, one in slalom) in the resort of Lower Austria.
