Mikel Arteta Invites Olivier Giroud Into Arsenal Dressing Room

Olivier Giroud made an emotional return to the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, where he was invited into the Arsenal dressing room by manager Mikel Arteta following Lille’s 3-0 Champions League defeat.

Arteta’s Dressing Room Invite After the Final Whistle

The reunion between Olivier Giroud and his former club was marked by a gesture from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. Giroud, who joined Lille from Los Angeles FC after a stint with AC Milan, noted that the visit was a personal highlight.

“Mikel [Arteta] told me to come into their dressing room to spend some time together. I went around the stadium after the match; it was very emotional.”

He noted that the reception from the Arsenal fans, who greeted his introduction with loud applause in the 78th minute, underscored a lasting bond. There are special feelings after five years here. They don’t forget. That’s what’s great about the English, he said. As a youngster, Giroud looked up to French players at the club like Thierry Henry, Robert Pires, Patrick Vieira, Emmanuel Petit, and Sylvain Wiltord.

Reflecting on the 2018 Departure to Chelsea

Giroud’s return prompted reflection on his departure from north London in January 2018.

Despite the success he found elsewhere—including winning the 2021 Champions League with Chelsea and titles with AC Milan—Giroud maintained that leaving Arsenal was one of the most difficult choices of his career. I was really sad when I left the club but I had to make that choice, and it was one of the toughest ones in my career, but it was important and necessary for the rest of my career, he explained. During his time in north London, he won a hat-trick of FA Cups, including the 2014 final where he provided the backheel assist for Aaron Ramsey’s extra-time winner against Hull City.

Giroud Praises Arteta as a Natural Leader

Having played alongside Arteta during their time together at Arsenal, Giroud expressed little surprise at the Spaniard’s success as a manager. According to Giroud, Arteta’s leadership qualities were evident even during his playing days, noting that he was very demanding with himself, and his team-mates and great technically. He added, I remember Mikel as a player, and you could see he was made for a managerial career because he was a leader on the pitch, but off it, too.

Lille’s Performance at the Emirates Stadium

While the off-pitch reunion was positive, Giroud acknowledged the competitive reality of the match.

“We fought well, the coach was proud of us after the match. We would have liked to be more dangerous going forward. We wanted to be compact, not to give them space, and we sat too deep.”

Giroud, who famously scored the winning penalty in the 2015 Community Shield against Chelsea, noted that Lille suffered from a lack of energy and a difference in quality on the night. As the match concluded, Giroud’s attention shifted away from the scoreline to the significance of the visit. For the 40-year-old, the opportunity to return to the stadium one final time in his career served as a highlight of his current season with Lille, even if it meant competing against the club where he netted 105 times.
