Mikel G. Gurpegui: Criticism of ‘The Lost King’ (2023): Obsessed by a king

We are so short of friendly and intelligent cinema for adults that let me recommend ‘The Lost King’ and even qualify it as very good (4 points), when perhaps it is not worthily good or more than 3. There are seasons in which some, I don’t know if many viewers miss movies made without fuss, but worked and enjoyable. For example, one like this in which a separated couple appears, but without drama, but rather affectionate daily life. For example, one like this in which the main character is extravagant, but as any neighbor can be, without adding excuses or exaggerations.

Let me advise you to watch ‘The Lost King’ before it flies out of theaters for several reasons. One, that looks more British than the coronation the other day. Two, that although his message seems like the typical defense of the different, he approaches it in a new way and adds the conviction that no one should be deified or demonized. Without forgetting the beautiful hymn to amateurism and the things we are passionate about and, therefore, obsessed with.

The Lost King

  • Address:
    Stephen Frears.

  • Script:
    Steve Coogan y Jeff Pope.

  • Interpreters:
Sally Hawkins, Steve Coogan, James Fleet.

  • Photography:
    Zac Nicholson.

  • Music:
    Alexandre Desplat.

  • Nationality:
    United Kingdom-France, 2022.

  • Duration:
    108 min.

And four more reasons, which are proper names. Sally Hawkins, that petite actress and kind of gone but always charming in roles of apparently fragile women, but with energy inside (‘The shape of water’). Stephen Frears, who, okay, never was the one from ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ again, but borders on little melodramas. More Alexandre Desplat in the music and the traveler Steve Coogan in the production, script and interpretation.

Together they make it an exhilarating and imaginative joy to learn the story (based on true events) of a woman obsessed with finding the mortal remains of Richard III and proving that he was not a treacherous and evil king but a legitimate and good one. In other words, the thing that everyone deserves a second chance, but with five hundred or so years in between.
