Ernest and Célestine are charming. The grumpy bear and the enthusiastic little mouse make an odd couple that steals hearts. They did it with their first feature film, the award-winning ‘Ernest and Célestine’ from 2012. After a television series that we couldn’t see, they are back in top form, with a new long adventure.

Ernest and Célestine’s journey

France. 2022. 79m. (TP). Animation

Direction: Jean-Christophe Roger and Julien Chheng.

Screenplay: Guillaume Mautalent and Sebastien Oursel, based on the books by Gabrielle Vincent.

Music: Vincent Courtois.

It’s hard to explain why Ernest and Célestine’s French cartoons are so pleasing, not just for their target audience under the age of ten, but for so many adults. In this crush they will have to see its watercolor colors and its delicious aspect of traditional animation in two dimensions that simplifies the lines of the illustrations made by Gabrielle Vincent in the books of the Gallimard publishing house.

The serene, playful, simple, timeless and comprehensive air with the characters in his stories also helps. The fact is that with Ernest and Célestine one feels like in a refuge far from the monotone noise of current international animation, at ease in a small world pampered by Didier Brunner, the producer of reference titles in French-speaking animation, such as ‘Kiriku and the witch’, ‘Welcome to Belleville’ or ‘The evil ferocious fox’.

In ‘The Journey of Ernest and Célestine’ the little mouse accidentally breaks the bear’s violin and they travel to repair it to his birthplace, Gibberish, with cable cars, strange traffic lights and even stranger concerts, since only one note is allowed (specifically , the do) for a law that has put musicians in jail and provoked an underground musical resistance.

The story is simple but with its details and some timely notes on totalitarianism and family relationships. A small marvel that does not deserve that we leave Ernest and Célestine alone in the movie theater.
