Walk along the loops of the intestine, closely observing how it is made and discovering everything that may be hidden there, including diverticula, polyps and the dreaded colorectal cancer. In Milan it will be possible to do this. At the Arco della Pace, in fact, on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 October there will be a ‘giant colon’, an inflatable tunnel set up to tell the story of the digestive system and its diseases in a simple and immediate way.
Specialists from the MultiMedica Group will be in the field and will also explain how to prevent these pathologies, and how to diagnose and treat them in good time. In other words, it will be possible to know ‘from the inside’ the secrets of the intestine, of our ‘second brain’, and also receive free consultations (by telephone booking, by calling 02/24209341, from Monday to Friday from 1pm to 3pm ). In the spotlight, above all, colorectal cancer, the second most frequent neoplasm in Italy. On Friday from 2pm to 6pm and on Saturday from 10am to 1pm the ‘guides’ in white coats of the tour to discover the intestine will provide citizens with advice and information material on the importance of prevention and screening of the main digestive diseases, on the alarm bells not to be overlooked. The initiative is organized with the technical and logistical support of the Milan Red Cross.
“More than 40% of the world’s population suffers from at least one functional gastrointestinal disorder, such as irritable bowel syndrome, and women are the most affected”, explains Mario Bianchetti, Director of the Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy Operational Unit of the MultiMedica Group, among the experts who will be available to visitors of the inflatable colon. “In recent years, interest in intestinal health has grown a lot but colorectal screening programs have not taken off because patients still fear colonoscopy. Yet, it is an extremely useful method that allows us to diagnose and immediately remove so-called intestinal polyps, lesions that could turn into tumors.”
“We will try – continues Bianchetti – to raise citizens’ awareness of the opportunity to undergo this life-saving test, explaining how it works and resolving doubts and fears. Thanks to artificial intelligence, today it is possible to trace even millimetric polyps, without making the method more invasive”.
“With around 50 thousand new diagnoses every year, colorectal cancer is the second most frequent cancer in Italy”, explains Andrea Porta, director of general surgery at the San Giuseppe hospital in Milan – MultiMedica Group, who will be present at the Arco della Peace. “In 90% of cases it develops from the degeneration of intestinal polyps. The treatment of this neoplasm cannot ignore surgery, which depending on the case can be associated with chemo and radiotherapy. Today the minimally invasive laparoscopic approach, which only requires small incisions on the abdomen, has taken the place of the conventional ‘open’ one. Experience and international studies confirm that the effectiveness is the same, with the advantages of laparoscopy in terms of post-operative recovery: yes. they reduce pain and hospital stays and the recovery of intestinal functions is faster. We will explain to citizens how this type of operation takes place, as well as the other main intervention methods in the gastro-intestinal tract”.
