Hard blow for AC Milan and perhaps also for the France team. Mike Maignan went off injured in the 80th minute of play against Newcastle, during the first day of the Champions League group stage. While the two teams neutralized each other (0-0, 80th), and Milan pushed to open the scoring, the Blues goalkeeper sat down on the pitch to request treatment.
After several dozen seconds of discussing with the club’s doctors, the French goalkeeper was replaced by Marco Sportiello less than ten minutes from the end of regulation time. The nature of his injury is not yet known. Mike Maignan seemed to suffer from thigh pain.
As a reminder, the French international missed several months of competition last season, and in particular the World Cup, due to a calf injury. The next gathering of the Blues is scheduled for mid-October. Didier Deschamps’ men must face the Netherlands on October 13 for qualifying for Euro 2024 then Scotland in a friendly on October 17.
