While much of the existing research on sleep and obesity has focused on extreme sleep restriction—often limiting participants to just four hours of rest—new findings from the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University suggest that more realistic, mild sleep deficits carry their own risks. The study examined 95 adults who typically slept at least seven hours per night and possessed existing cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors.
For a six-week period, participants delayed their bedtimes by 90 minutes, resulting in an average reduction of sleep duration by approximately 80 minutes. During this time, researchers measured key health indicators, including weight, waist circumference, and hormone levels. The results showed that participants gained an average of 0.45 kilograms—roughly one pound—compared to the six-week period when they maintained their normal sleep schedules.
Beyond the scale, the researchers noted a shift in daily activity levels. During the sleep-restricted phase, participants increased their sedentary time by an average of 17 minutes per day. This increase was even more pronounced among men and postmenopausal women, who spent nearly 30 minutes more per day sitting. As reported by the research team, this data refutes the idea that extra time awake naturally leads to more physical activity.
Hormonal Responses and Long-Term Metabolic Risks
The study also investigated whether appetite-regulating hormones were responsible for the observed weight gain. Interestingly, levels of leptin, a hormone that typically suppresses appetite, were higher during the periods of sleep restriction. This finding complicates the traditional theory that sleep loss leads to weight gain primarily through hormonal-driven overeating.

The research builds on earlier investigations involving a subset of 38 women from the same group. Those findings indicated that a reduction in sleep of approximately 80 minutes per night over six weeks increased insulin resistance, a known risk factor for type 2 diabetes, with the effect being particularly significant in postmenopausal women. Additional data from the same cohort showed that even mild sleep deficits can cause immune cells to migrate more readily to sites of inflammation, according to findings documented by the team.
Rethinking Modern Sleep Habits
The researchers emphasize that the weight gain observed over just six weeks is significant when extrapolated over a full year. By prioritizing other daily activities over sleep, many adults may be inadvertently increasing their risk for chronic health issues. The study suggests that focusing exclusively on diet and exercise may be an incomplete strategy for weight management.
